Teeth Grinding

Teeth Grinding

The excessive grinding of teeth or clenching of the jaw is called bruxism, and there are two types: one that occurs during sleep and another while the individual is awake. Bruxism is quite a common problem, and those who suffer from it (particularly sleep bruxism) are not usually aware that they experience it. In the long run, however, bruxism can lead to hypersensitive teeth, sore jaw muscles, headaches, worn and/or broken teeth, and damage to dental restorations and appliances such as crowns, bridges, fillings, and implants.

If you suspect that you are suffering from bruxism, you may see Buckhead Esthetic Dentistry for treatments and solutions. Allow us to remedy your teeth grinding and protect your teeth from long-term damage.

The Various Causes for Teeth Grinding

  • Malocclusion
  • Temporomandibular Joint Dysfunction (TMD)
  • Parkinson’s and Huntington’s disease
  • Feelings of anxiety, irritation, or pressure

Diagnosing Teeth Grinding

Dr. Warren of Buckhead Esthetic Dentistry is capable of diagnosing bruxism through a careful examination. She looks for some of the more common signs of teeth grinding and then identifies the grinding’s underlying cause. She then prescribes an appropriate treatment based on the cause.

The symptoms of teeth grinding are:

  • Worn, flattened, fractured, or chipped teeth due to the attrition they experience during grinding
  • Similarly worn tooth enamel
  • Sudden tooth sensitivity
  • Acute jaw pain, soreness, or tightness of the muscles
  • Pain in the ears
  • Headaches
  • Facial pain, without any discernable source
  • Signs of damaged tissue on the inside of the patient’s cheek

Treating Teeth Grinding

There are ways to reduce the effects of teeth grinding, specifically cases of sleep bruxism. The simplest approach would be to prevent the teeth from grinding using a specially-made mouth guard. More advanced solutions include the surgical correction of malocclusion, medication for cases of TMJ, the removal and replacement of problem teeth. Dr. Warren chooses the best possible solution for her patients so that they no longer have to worry about bruxism while keeping their teeth intact.
